Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about claiming your teacher tax rebate.
Who can claim a teacher tax rebate?
Most UK teachers, teaching assistants, supply staff and other school employees who pay for work-related costs — such as union or professional fees, specialist clothing, mileage or working-from-home expenses — that their employer doesn't reimburse. Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances and HMRC's rules.
How much could I get back?
It varies. The amount depends on which allowances apply to you and how many years you claim for (up to four). Some teachers receive a modest amount; others more. We'll give you an honest estimate during your free check — but tax relief is never guaranteed.
Can I claim for previous years?
Yes. HMRC allows you to backdate a claim for the current tax year plus the four previous ones. First-time claims covering several years are often the largest.
What does it cost?
Checking your eligibility is free. If you'd like our help, our DIY Guide is £19, our Managed Claim Service is a £90 flat fee, and our 4-Year Backdated Review is £120. Our managed services are money-back if no rebate is due. See our Fees page for full details.
Can't I just claim directly from HMRC myself?
Absolutely — you can claim directly from HMRC for free at gov.uk, and you never have to use an agent. Our service simply saves you the time and hassle and helps make sure nothing eligible is missed. Our DIY Guide is there if you'd like to do it yourself with expert guidance.
How is my refund paid?
HMRC pays your refund directly to you — usually by bank transfer or cheque. Your refund does not pass through us.
How long does it take?
Timescales are set by HMRC and can vary, typically from a few weeks to a couple of months once a claim is submitted. We'll keep you updated throughout.
Is my information safe?
Yes. We handle your data in line with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. We never sell your information. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
